Questions, answered plainly.
Making a Will
Do I need a lawyer to make a Will here?
No. This is a platform, not a law firm: you answer the questions, the system assembles a Will that complies with the law, and you can print and sign it the same day without a solicitor being involved. A review by a practising Nigerian solicitor is available as a paid extra if you want a second pair of eyes — it is included with Premium — but it is never something you have to pass through, and skipping it is a single click.
Is a Will made on this platform legally binding?
Yes, provided it is properly executed. The document we generate contains the clauses a valid Will requires — a declaration, revocation of earlier Wills, appointment of executors, disposition of the estate and an attestation clause. It becomes legally effective when you sign it in the simultaneous presence of two witnesses, who then sign in your presence. Until it is signed, it is a draft with no legal effect.
Who can make a Will?
Any person of full age — eighteen or over — who is of sound mind, memory and understanding. Our questionnaire will not proceed if the date of birth you enter puts you under eighteen.
How long does it take?
There are four short steps and a final review, designed to be finished in one sitting. Nothing is timed — you can save your progress at any point and return later, and nothing is lost between sessions.
What if I own property outside Nigeria?
Immovable property is generally governed by the law of the country where it sits. If you hold land or a house abroad, a separate Will in that jurisdiction is often the safer arrangement — one document covering both can create a conflict. This is exactly the case worth buying the solicitor review for, because nobody reads your draft unless you ask for one.
Witnesses and executors
Can a beneficiary be a witness?
No. A gift to an attesting witness — or to that witness's spouse — is void, even though the Will itself remains valid. Our builder blocks this combination in both directions: it will not let you add a witness who is already a beneficiary, nor a beneficiary who is already a witness.
How many witnesses do I need?
Two. Both must be present at the same time when you sign, and both must then sign in your presence. A witness should be an adult of sound mind who is not inheriting under the Will.
Can a beneficiary be an executor?
Yes. It is common and perfectly lawful for a spouse or adult child to serve as executor while also inheriting. The restriction applies to witnesses, not executors.
How many executors should I appoint?
We recommend at least two, plus an alternate. Executors move abroad, fall ill, or decline the role when the moment arrives, and an estate with no one willing to act must go back to court.
Children and guardianship
Do I need to appoint a guardian?
If you have children under eighteen, or are leaving anything to someone who is, yes. Without an appointed guardian, a court decides who raises your children on whatever evidence is in front of it. Our builder asks for a guardian beside any beneficiary you mark as under eighteen, and asks nothing if none are.
Should I tell the guardian I have named them?
Please do. An appointment that arrives as a surprise during grief serves nobody. Naming an alternate is equally important.
Security and privacy
How are my documents protected?
Every document you upload is encrypted with AES-256-GCM before it leaves our servers, so our storage provider only ever holds ciphertext. Each download re-verifies the file against a checksum recorded at upload, so an altered file fails rather than reaching you.
Who can see my Will?
You, and the reviewers you ask to look at it. Confidentiality is one of our core values and our charter forbids us from misusing personal information or disclosing it beyond what you have instructed.
Should I email you my documents?
Please do not. Email is not a secure channel for identity documents or title deeds. Upload them to your encrypted vault instead. If you need to reach us about a document, call 08111115547 and reference it by name.
Cost and updates
Is this a subscription?
The Will is not — you pay once for it, and it is yours to keep, print and sign with no renewal charge. Only continuing amendments are a subscription: once a Will has been issued, reopening it to amend and re-issue is covered by an annual fee. If you never change it, you never pay again.
Can I change my Will later?
Yes. While your Will is still a draft you can revise it freely at no cost. Once it has been issued, amendments are covered by the annual subscription — then you revise the relevant section, re-issue, and sign the new document afresh with two witnesses. Every version keeps its own document number and revision history.
When do I pay, and when do you check my identity?
You can write the whole Will before paying anything. Payment comes first at the point you want the finished document, and the identity check follows it — once only, the first time. If we have verified you before, all that remains is a short camera check to confirm it is you today.
How often should I review it?
Every twelve months as a matter of routine, and after any marriage, birth of a child, or acquisition of significant property. Marriage in particular can revoke a Will made beforehand. We will remind you.
For legal practitioners
Can I draft for my clients on this platform?
Yes. Lawyers draft at a per-Will professional rate rather than the consumer price, with no subscription and no minimum volume. Register as a lawyer with your Supreme Court enrolment number and we will confirm it against the roll before your first bill. Lodging remains payable to the registry and is charged separately, exactly as it is for anyone else.
Do I have to pay for your review as well?
No. The solicitor's review is there for clients drafting without a lawyer. You are the lawyer on the matter, so there is nothing for us to add and nothing further to pay.
